EA creates competitor to Steam: Origin

EA creates competitor to Steam: Origin

Postby [SOFW]VaderOnIce » Fri Jun 03, 2011 9:25 am

Not sure if this means BF3 won't be available on Steam, but it looks like EA is going to have its own digital store, with features like Steam.

Check out the article below:

http://kotaku.com/5808095/ea-is-launchi ... competitor

They're supposed to be releasing more solid info sometime today in the runup to E3.

Update: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/03/ea-ta ... ad-the-ol/

This newer article says they'll have a special limited edition version of BF3 via the Origin store. I wonder what the difference will be between versions of BF3.

Update: Check out EA's battlefield blog post here: http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/battlef ... o-e3.aspx##

Here are some choice bits. Looks like they'll be adding team deathmatch (or as I like to call it Call of Duty mode) to multiplayer. And co-op to single player. Also:

"So what can you expect from the Battlefield 3 multiplayer? Powered by the Frostbite 2 engine, Battlefield 3 features some of the biggest and most spectacular maps that we have built. At the same time, we are also able to create more intense close-quarter combat than ever before. The multiplayer map, “Operation Métro,” available for press to play on the show floor, combines both sides of the scale into one cohesive experience. Gamers will experience a physical battlefield and be able to temporarily disable vehicles, go prone, mount weapons, lay down suppressive fire and more. "

Temporarily disable vehicles? Is the engineer going to carry a compressor so he can put air in the tires if they're flat?

EMP for disabling vehicles, I'd imagine.

Tough to weigh in on this new version of EA's Steam "Origin". I remember all the trouble we had when steam first released and the unavailability of your games when Steam crashed. I'm getting to old for that shit. EA's I think wants a bigger piece of the pie and wants all the proceeds for themselves so they have decided to reinvent the wheel lol.

I agree with Bang. They actually already have that EA Store which they've changed like three times. I downloaded Battlefield 2142 and the BF2 map packs from there and each time I had to redownload them, it was a whole different process with a different program.

Yesterday EA pulled Crysis 2 from the Steam store so its only available digitally via Amazon and EA's Origina store. They also did the same for the newly released Alice game. I'm pretty sure we can bet BF3 won't be available on Steam.

And they'll probably give you a free in game hat or something similarly stupid to buy it from their Origin store instead of getting discs. If it's the red medic hat from BC2, it's going to be hard for me to turn them down.
